A potential match up with # 2 seed Bronson Ashjian vs # 7 seed Zach Perry in the semi's & another potential match up is at 160 lbs with # 1 seed Ryder Newman vs # 2 seed Ray Waters in the finals. These could be possible previews at State in Nevada. _________________ Its all business up front & a party in the rear ! |

Battle for the Belt Preview (Weight Class by Weight Class)
Welcome to the 5th Annual Clinch Gear Battle for the Belthosted by Temecula Valley High School. It is the goal of Temecula Valley High School toprovide wrestlers, coaches, and fans with a first class wrestling tournament that features the best in competition, awards, and service to those in attendance. Furthermore, it is our goal to improve the event in various ways each and every year. This year will be no different as anumber of quality teams and individuals have joined the field including someout of state flavor. New additions include schools like Green Valley and Spring Valley who typically field some ofthe top individuals in the state of Nevada as well as Pine Creek, Colorado whofields a number of state placers and Fargo All-Americans. Also, a number of North Coast Section and Northern Section schools have joined the field helping to better represent the various wrestling regions throughout the state of California. Once again, eight of the state’s ten CIF sections have brought their best competitors to battle for the coveted Title Belt. Though perennial state power Clovis is the favorite to take home their third consecutive title, eight of the state’s top ten ranked teams will be inattendance, making the team competition a good barometer for how teams may finish in March.
106
We startoff at 106 pounds, which represents one of the four weight classes containing areturning California state champion in Johnson Mai of North Torrance. While Mai is the clear favorite at thisweight class, don’t overlook Sean Cannon of Green Valley, Nevada who won this season’s Reno TOC in dominating fashion. Also hoping to challenge for the title are freshman standout Angel Velasquez of Central Catholic and returning Los Angeles Section championSergio Mendez of San Fernando. Others standouts at this weight class include Poway’s Tirso Lara, Calvary Chapel’s Gordon McDonald, and Elk Grove’s JacobLopez.
113
Returningstate finalist Isaiah Locsin of LiveOak appears to be the class of this division. Only a sophomore, Locsin is undefeated having claimed titles atthe prestigious Reno Tournament of Champions and Doc Buchanan tournaments indominating fashion. Looking toavenge his loss to Locsin in the Doc Buchanan finals will be last year’s Battle for the Belt runner-up at 103,Micah Perez of Central Union. Looking to throw a wrench in this potential match-up will be former state qualifiers Juan Garza of Oakdale, Sean Williams of Lemoore, Chris Tamez of Clovis East, Shawn Miller ofValhalla, Jaxon Fitzgerald of Foothill—Palo Cedro, and freshman standout Joseph Dominguez of St. John Bosco. Nevada stateplacer Jared Brathor of Green Valley should also challenge for a medal at 113.
120
In what seems to be a relatively competitive field, returning state medalist Jonas Gaytan of Clovis appears to be thefavorite. Having claimed the title at the prestigious Doc Buchanan tournament, Gaytan will seek to improve on his second place finish at last year’s Battle for the Belt. Also in the title hunt will be last year’s third place finisher in the Southern Section Taylor Hall of Canyon Springs, three time state qualifier Josh Miranda of Poway, and returning state qualifier Zeke Andrade of Foothill—Palo Cedro. Other wrestlers to watch include Folsom’s Lorenzo De La Riva, St. John Bosco’s Johnny Zazuerta, and Chico’s Mason Sausedo.
126
The 126 pound division is perhaps the most competitive weight class in the tournament. Returning state champion Daniel Gaytan of Clovis will seek to avenge earlier season losses to returning state finalist Josh Rodriguez of Righetti and Doc Buchanan finalist Connor Pollock of Folsom. If he is to have a chance to avenge these losses, however, he will have to get through a very tough field that includes San Diego Section champion and state quarter-finalist Evan McKirdy of Del Norte and returning state qualifiers Peter Palacios ofCalvary Chapel, Daniel Polanco of Saint Francis, Michael Rodriguez of Alta Loma, Kevin Coburn of Granada, Joey Ramirez of De La Salle, and Artemio Flores of James Logan.
132
This weight class should be interesting as freshman phenom Anthony Valencia of St. John Bosco will wrestle up a division this weekend. Having already won the prestigious Doc Buchanan tournament and placed at the Walsh Ironman in Ohio, Valencia will likely be the top ranked 126 pounder in the state when the new rankings are released. If he wants a shot at becoming the first ever four time belt winner, he will have to contend with the likes of two time state medalist and returning Battle for the Belt finalist Martin Ramirez of Elk Grove. Another Battle for the Belt finalist in his own right, Poway’s Jesse Taylor will also contend for the belt at 132. Returning state qualifiers Matt Gay of Clovis, TJ Grisafe of La Costa Canyon, and Nevada state champion Zack Perry of Green Valley should also challenge at this weight.
138
With weight plans playing a role, two Bakersfield stars are forced to compete at138. Two time state placer and returning Battle for the Belt champion Natrelle Demison and fourth place state finisher Micah Cruz could indeed meet in an all Driller final. Seeking to derail an all Bakersfield matchup will be Central Section standout, Patrick Phaysamone of Clovis East and returning Battle for the Belt semifinalist Jon Jay Chavez of De La Salle. Last year’s third place finisher in the Southern Section, Jacob Leon of Alta Loma, may also challenge for the belt. Other wrestlers to watch include returning state qualifiers Michael Longo of Calvary Chapel and Tony Jimenez of Dinuba, San Diego section champion Antonio Perez of Central Union, and Sergio Enloe of Clovis.
145
The 145pound division boasts a number of state place winners including a couple from other states. Leading the field are fourth place California state finisher Adam Hendrickson of Healdsburg and two time Nevada state champion Alex Aniciete of Las Vegas. Bakersfield’s Maxx Ramirez was sixth at last year’sCalifornia state tournament and Pine Creek’s Derrick Ortiz was sixth in the state of Colorado. Despite all of these credentials, this weight class appears to be relatively wide open. There are a number of state qualifiers who may also challenge for the belt including Chico’s Pang Lee, Bellarmine’s RJ Raffanti, Clovis’ Jason Ladd, Righetti’s Luke Wilson, and La Sierra’s Taylor McCormick.
152
In a weight class that boasts some extremely talented wrestlers, one young man appears head and shoulders above the rest. In a long list of credentials that includes returning state champion, Cadet National Champion, Walsh Ironman finalist, and Doc B champion,Lemoore’s Isaiah Martinez will seek to become the first ever three time Battle for the Belt champion. Also hoping to compete for the title is former Cadet national finalist and California state place winner Coleman Hammond of Bakersfield. Hammond could be tested by fellow California state medalist and defending Sac-Joaquin section champion Austin Branum of Del Oro. Others who will contend for medals include Central Coast Section champion and three time state qualifier Jorge Barajas of Saint Francis, Central Section placers Kyle Perrault of Clovis East and Colby Thompson ofClovis, and state qualifier out of the Northern Section Dallas Poston of Foothill—Palo Cedro.
160
This weight class might be the most unpredictable as it contains some out of state flavor along with three undefeated wrestlers. Green Valley’s Ryder Newman is the returning Nevada state champion and he was also fourth at this year’s RenoTournament of Champions. Spring Valley’s Ray Waters is currently undefeated and was the runner-up in last year’s Nevada state championships. Waters was also a Junior Freestyle All-American in Fargo last summer. Clovis’ Adrian Salas boasts a California state medal to his resume, but has had very few matches during this wrestling season. Undefeated wrestlers Brady Beamon of Steele Canyon and Sam Hopkins of Saint Francis are both returning state qualifiers. Brady was a San Diego Section champion while Hopkins was the runner-up in the Central Coast Section. Last year’s runner-up in the North Coast Section, Matthew Tsarnas of Healdsburg, should also challenge for the belt at this weight. Others to watch include Poway’s Stevie Cervantes, Folsom’s Devon Nooner, and ML King’s Harlan Kistler II.
170
In a weight class that has eight returning state qualifiers, three time state placer Zach Nevills of Clovis appears to be the favorite. Former Colorado state champion Connor King, now competing for Poway should also contend. If the seeds hold, the Battle for the Belt semifinals could entail a riveting rematch of last week’s Doc B semifinals in which Nevills squeaked out an overtime win over King in a hotly contested match. Hoping to meet one of them in the finals is returning state placer Silas Nacita of Bakersfield. Other returning state qualifiers hoping to challenge for the belt include Jesse Orona of Carlsbad, undefeated Dylan Morris of Redwood, Immanuel Barber of Canyon Springs, Brett Sayre of Temecula Valley, and Doc B placers Josh McFadden of Central Union and Nick Traquato of Ponderosa.
182
This weight class represents what is by far the most wide open field. A number of talented wrestlers who could vie for the belt include returning state qualifier Kyle Pope of Bakersfield, Doc B placer Ryan Davies of Clovis, San Diego Section runner-up Augie DeSantis of Escondido, Northern Section finalist Mark Jorgenson of Chico, and state qualifier out of the Central Section Florencio Vega of Clovis East. Other wrestlers to watch include Chaparral’s Jon Wixom, La Costa Canyon’s Paul Head, and Poway’s Brit Bastow.
195
Two returning California state medalists appear to be the class of this field. Clovis’ Dakota Gordon has been dominating his opponents this season with the exception of his sole defeat coming during a dual meet versus perennial national power St. Ed’s of Ohio. Gordon rolled through the competition at last week en route to claiming the Doc Buchanan title. This week, however, Gordon may be pushed by Robert Marchese of Oak Hills. Marchese is a two time state placer and is currently undefeated at 20-0. Looking to challenge Gordon and Marchese will be Colorado state placer Brandon Tribble of Pine Creek and returning state qualifier (and undefeated wrestler) Anthony Flores of Alta Loma. Also in contention for medals will be Carlsbad’s Chance Eskam, Poway’s Tim Chassen, La Costa Canyon’s Cody Williams, and Folsom’s Alex Wood.
220
Due to his school’s involvement in the state football playoffs, returning state medalist Justin Walker of De La Salle is in his first major wrestling competition of the season. Despite this fact, Walker appears to be the clear favorite at this weight. Hoping to challenge Walker is Poway’s Richard Durr. Durr has placed at all major competitions this year including the Reno Tournament of Champions (3rd) and the Doc B (5th). Returning state qualifier Josh Letuligasenoa will hope to avenge a double overtime loss to Durr in the fifth place match at the Doc B. Undefeated Diego Vasquez of Vista Murrieta could also surprise some people at this weight. Others to watch include Bloomington’s Derrick Jones, Sultana’s Zac Williams, and Clovis East’s Gannon Delfierro.
285
Returning state champion and nationally ranked Nick Nevills of Clovis looks to erase an upset loss at last year’s Battlefor the Belt by claiming this year’s title. Hoping to challenge Nevills will be Southern Section finalist Robert Chism of Downey, Reno TOC and Doc B placer Kelly Simmons of Poway, Doc B placer Kenneth Clark of Carter, third place Nevada state finisher Lahmad Evans of Las Vegas, and returning state qualifier Jordan Alleva of Folsom. |

160's Newman and Waters 1-2 hope that match happens. that could be Nevada State Finals right there. Good luck to Alex at 145's, I'm sure he'll make the right adjustments and be strong for this one. Sean Cannon should be a wrecking Ball he's been on fire all season. Jared Bathor is allway's tough. Good luck to all the Nevada boys. _________________ To be the BEST you train with the BEST. |
