|
|
I have an HP computer with Windows 7. I wanted to watch downloaded movies from Netflix on my flat screen tv so I bought a long VGA cable and plugged one end into the back of my tower, where the original monitor was plugged, and the other end into the back of the tv. To watch the video I just scroll in the tv's input to PC and the picture is beautiful. The problem is that I don't have any sound now. Neither from the computers internal speaker or from the tv. How do I resolve this? I must note that I have a soundbar hooked up to the tv, too, but before I plugged in the cable from my computer, it worked perfectly.
One other question. Is there a switch I can buy to switch from one VGA to the other without having to constantly disconnect one and reconnect the other?
Thank you in advance. |

Hi 03America,
The VGA cable most likely is not a composite and your hookup appears like a standard VGA connection. This will not transmit sound. If you select the output on the PC to TV it is sending the sound with the picture and with your hookup the TV doesn't recognize the sound. There are many ways to accomplish what you want and will depend on the connections your TV and PC has.
HDMI is best as a HDMI connection on the TV will expect both video and
sound in the connection.
Set the settings in the PC to dual monitor and the PC will still play the sound.
If the PC has headpone jacks and the TV has audio input jacks, then standard dual male stereo connectors can input the sound from the headphone output of the PC to the aduio input of the TV. You still may have to have the PC set to dual monitors for this to work as single monitor TV only will killl sound output everywhere else except through the VGA composite, DVI, or HDMI connection.

| Thank you for your reply. What I ended up doing is hooking up a stereo y adapter to the headphone jack in my omputer and hooking the other end to the Input 1 of my soundbar. Afer I did all this I noticed a PC/DVI jack in the back of my tv. If I hooked a cable to this jack, would I get sound? I do have aa DVI port in the back of my tower, although the connection looks like a VGA but bigger but the PC/DVI connection on my tv looks like it takes a pin. Thanks again for your help |

No, a DVI by itself will not carry sound. My reference was to modified DVI connectors from more advance graphic cards. Only HDMI carries both sound and Video in one cable, but since HDMI is a new thing there are modified DVI connectors that with a DVI to HDMI cable will carry the sound. Since this is a laptop and the TV does not have a HDMI connection, the DVI you have will only carry video (maybe a little better than the VGA but still just video). The sound will still have to be the output of the laptop. An audio line out connection on a laptop is usually the headphone jack. If you have an entertainment system you could line in to that system to get better sound.

drcard,
I am coming off a desktop computer and my tv does have a HDMI connection. Sorry I didn't make this clear. I assumed (yea, I know) since my computer didn't have a HMDI connection I couldn't use the one on the TV. Does this change things any?
I really do appreciate your input.

Yes. You can get a DVI to HDMI convertor cable (these are cheap). It will have a place for the sound output line of the PC to the cable. The sound and the DVI will be converted to HDMI which your TV will accept giving you both video and sound.
This site explains the setup.
