Which one is more relaible? what is the difference between the two? the average lifespan of an internal hard drive is 2-3 yrs. Is it the same for an external hard drive?

There are about the same, but some externals have more shock resistance to compensate for being moved around. Actually they sell adapters for very little cost that will turn an internal into an external (I have one for IDE and SATA). They have about the same average life span. The main reason that externals appear to last longer is that most externals are not the main boot drive. Caution should be used in having the external as the boot drive. BIOS has to have the ability to load drivers to boot to an external while internal HDDs have default configuration for BIOS. If you boot from an external on a regular basis make sure you have a bootable CD for troubles.

The big bad difference in an external as the main drive is performance. The transfer speed to an internal are faster than to an external due to the limitations of the connection.

My advice is a modest internal for Windows and programs and a large external for data storage.
