AOL uses a proprietary email system which often makes transferring your emails difficult. However, this will show you how you can retrieve your AOL (American On Line) emails from any email client that supports SMTP settings (as well as POP3 settings).

The procedure is really easy and doesn’t require any special skill. The reason why a lot of users decide to “download” their emails on email clients such Mozilla Thunderbird or Microsoft Outlook is really simple. If you don’t have a lot of time, because for example you have to catch a plane, you can not sit down and read all of your emails using the traditional webmail client. You rather want to download all your emails to your computer and read them later while you are on the plane, train, bus etc. using your small laptop or iPad. This guide will show you how:

AOL SMTP Settings

SMTP server address: smtp.aol.com

SMTP user name: Your AOL username (usually the name you used on your AOL email address. Ex: John@aol.com. In this case you will have to use “John” as SMTP username).

SMTP password: The password used to login to your AOL webmail client

SMTP port: 587

SMTP TLS/SSL required: yes

AOL POP3 Settings

POP server : pop.aol.com
POP user name : Your AOL username (usually the name you used on your AOL email address. Ex: John@aol.com. In this case you will have to use “John” as POP3 username).
POP password: The password used to login to your AOL webmail client
POP port: 995
POP TLS/SSL required: yes
