Hi DR,
Fighting to keep junk mail (spam) out of your inbox is a never ending battle that some people make a living doing just that. As soon as a program finds a way to stop junk mail, those that make a living sending that junk mail find a way to get around the program so their junk mail will get through.
The best solution in decreasing the amount of junk mail you get is for the spammers to not have your e-mail address and use the best e-mail spam filtering you can find. Even this is not fool proof as some spammers will send every possible combination of an e-mail address to find active addresses. How do you keep your e-mail address away from spammers and who has the best spam filtering program? This is hard to do when you have to give your e-mail address just to sign up at any site or buy anything on the web. Below is my solution. I see approximately 1 or 2 junk emails a week.
I have two e-mail addresses. The public one is through Gmail. Gmail has some of the best spam filters out there and filters 50 - 100 junk mails from my address daily. My settings in Gmail are such that I never see these filtered junk emails. I use this e-mail address for almost everything. I let the pros at Gmail maintain the spam filters. My other private e-mail address is only known to a select few friends and family members.
You can configure your Gmail and other e-mail address to get all your e-mail at the same time. Thus when I request my mail I get the filtered results from Gmail and my private account. Once in a while a spammer finds a way to by pass Gmail's filters, but Gmail adjusts their settings and such by passes are blocked within a day or two. I never have to logon to the Gmail site to get my mail and I don't have to read my e-mail on the Gmail site. When I do get a junk mail I never open or view the e-mail in HTML format (which tells the spammer that the address is active and live) as this will result in even more junk mail.
Others may have their solutions, but having only 1 or 2 junk emails a week while reading all my e-mail in my e-mail program works for me.
