In addition to another problem on another posting, when my computer is sitting idle for a long time or if I turn it off, the monitor screen is bright white. It has never done this before. It used to go black. Any suggestions?
I am using XP. |

Rick,
You didn't mention whether you are using a CRT or LCD monitor but my guess is that it is going to some white screensaver mode. Check your monitor settings and make sure any screensaver/wallpaper function is off.

Mark,
I have an LCD monitor. I turned off screensaver and wallpaper.
What's puzzling about this is that even when I turn the tower off, the monitor goes black for a second and then it goes to bright white.
I have a Dell monitor and tower. When I push in the tower on/off button the monitor turns white then, too. Strange. |

Hi 03America,
LCD with white screen means the back light is on. If you turn the power off and the screen is white means that it is not turning off. Your description of being turned off by the tower and still white further supports this.
Simple test. Unplug the power cord to the monitor. What color does the screen turn? No White after unplugging means the monitor is not turning off by switch or tower.
If what I stated happens then it means that the controller board in the monitor is faulty. These can be replaced, but unless this is a very costly LCD the repair costs will quickly near the cost of a new monitor.
To complete this for others that may have a LCD with a white screen:
White screen LCD can be caused by:
1) Bad graphic card (motherboard if the graphics are on board)
2) Bad monitor cable or (more likely) connectors.
3) Bad LCD controller board
If the system is a laptop add to list
4) Bad power invertor in laptop

One more thing, yes you are correct, once I pull the plug from the monitor the screen does go black.
If I use the tower or monitor switch it stays white.
Thanks again for your info. |
