NH 4/28/12
14 lb jake
After a late start ( I was slow getting the boy up) we arrived at the blind at 5:30. We spotted one bird in the cornfield on the side hill so we came in through the woods to the backside of the blind. After a belly crawl to put the decoy out we got ready to play the game! I waited 10 minutes to let things settle down a bit but with the wind howling I knew that bird didnt hear us setting up and that bird was at least 200 yards away.....I grabbed my box call and the widow maker mouth call. I started with a few loud yelps on the box. The bird looked and started our way slowly.......As the bird moved up the hill Austin looks into the lower part of the field and spots 2 more birds working their way up the hill towards the other bird. I let out another series of yelps on the box and the birds looked our way again but I do not believe they could see the decoy because our set up was in a small dip in the corner or a green field but as the birds moved up the hill and I let out another couple yelps on the box they looked our way again but this time they locked on to the decoy and began to come to us........with some coaching and patience we got those 2 jakes to within 10 steps of our blind........Austin made a great shot on that bird! The look of shock on his face when that bird tipped over was AWESOME and will be in my head for my remaining days......
Lots of high fives and reliving the hunt on the way home and to the checking station were some of the highlights of our day!!
thanks guys for all the congrats!!!

I don't believe that ANYTHING is better than watching a youth get his/her first bird but for it to be your own son/daughter is the cream of the crop. Congratulations to you both!!!!! _________________ 1Up Game Calls: "The calls that put 'em on the wall." |
