This is my daughter Erin’s last year of high school as she’s off to the University of Waterloo next fall. She works part time at the library after school, volunteers at the animal shelter and over all she’s maintained a 90+ average throughout high school .....needless to say we're proud of how focused she is for her age.
We compared calendars and the second day of the season in the afternoon was going to be the only chance we had to really get out together. I picked her up from school at 2:30 pm and she was changed and we were heading North by 3:00 pm. It was raining off and on so we decided to bring the pop up blind with us and do some calling on the edge of a winter wheat field where I’d spied some birds earlier.
By 4:00 pm we were set and we only heard one gobble way to the south of us about 4:10. I called intermittently and around 4:55 I swear I could hear a bird drumming but I couldn’t see him. At 5:00 I let out a few soft calls on the Power Crystal, set it down and figured we were in for the long haul. About then I heard one single cluck – a gobbler cluck. I peered out the blind towards the decoys and a gobbler had snuck in silently and was checking them out.
I told Erin to make sure the barrel of her little shot gun is out the window; she shoots an 1187 20 ga youth model and since I didn’t have turkey loads for it she was using the Kent Ultimate Waterfowl loads; 3 inch #5's
She took her time, lined him up and dropped him dead at 15 yards. Look at the watch – 5:03 pm. This bird was a brute by Northern standards, topping out on our scale at 23 lbs 6 oz, with an even 10” beard and 1” and 7/8th inch spurs
Going to be a hard bird for the old man to top but I still have a month
Love the boots

That is AWESOME!!!! A hunt that you and your daughter will remember forever!! And a nice bird at that too!! She's so small, and the gobbler is so large, he looks half her size!!
PS As a father of 18 & 20 year old daughters, I can say with confidence that you sir are in BIG trouble!! Your daughter is a cutey, and the boys are gonna come a runnin'!! Just keep your shotgun on the table and be wiping it down whenever some boy comes courting your little girl!! _________________ All we need to do is call those hens across this field. |

Forget wiping your gun down... leave HER gun out and make sure those boys know that SHE knows how to use it!!! _________________ 1Up Game Calls: "The calls that put 'em on the wall." |
